Sensei Carl van der Merwe: 40 Years of Dedication to Goju-Ryu Karate in Namibia

For four decades, Sensei Carl van der Merwe has been a cornerstone in the martial arts community of Namibia, leaving an undeniable mark through his unwavering commitment to Goju-Ryu karate. This year marks a significant milestone in his journey as he celebrates 40 years since he first stepped onto the dojo floor on May 1st, 1984.

Sensei Carl’s dedication to the Goju-Ryu Karate is evident in his remarkable achievements over the years. In 1999, he assumed the role of Chief Instructor of Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate Namibia (OGKN), a position from which he has tirelessly worked to cultivate a thriving martial arts community. Under his guidance, the organization has flourished currently boasting a membership of over 150 active students, and many more who have benefited from his expertise and passion for karate over the years.

One of the highlight moments of Sensei Carl’s career came in 2016 when he achieved the prestigious rank of 7th Dan in Okinawa, Japan. This remarkable accomplishment not only solidified his place as one of the highest-ranked Goju-Ryu practitioners on the African continent but also served as a testament to his lifelong dedication and pursuit of excellence.

Despite his demanding schedule as an accountant and business owner during the day, Sensei Carl’s commitment to karate remains unwavering. Balancing his professional responsibilities with his role as a karate instructor, he continues to impart his knowledge and passion to the next generation of martial artists, instilling in them the values of discipline, perseverance, and respect.
