Members of the Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Namibia organization in attended the 37th Annual National Karate Championships held at the Walvis Bay Municipal Sports Centre on 9 April. Over 100 competitors from both Windhoek and Walvis Bay participated in Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring).
The championship also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Walvis Bay Goju-Ryu Karate Club. The Club was established in March 1991 by Senseis Carl van der Merwe and Nico Maritz with Riaan Maritz as the third student. 25 Years later the club has more than 80 members and is presenting traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate at international standards in their own club building in Meersig.
